Loading ...Mature aged Ashton Hams (23) has been thrown a lifeline in playing AFL football, by the West Coast Eagles in this years Rookie Draft.
An electrician by trade, Hams was working on a roof top when he received a call from his friend, informing him he had been drafted by the Eagles. The exciting phone call came as even more of a shock than normal, as Hams had completely forgotten the draft was on that day.
The Eagles used their 3rd round pick (40), to select the AFL ready Hams.
Hams joins West Coast with plenty of football experience under his belt.
He has played 84 senior football games, including being in South Fremantles premiership sides of 2005 and 2009. Playing a solid role in defence this year, Hams was named best on ground in this year’s grand final.
He was also a member of their 2006 side who lost to Subiaco in the grand final.
Hams is a physical defender who attacks the football and has a precise left boot.
Used to playing in defence alongside his twin brother Kyle, Ashton feels some pressure to perform convincingly, so recruiters will also consider drafting his brother at the end of next season.
